FRRO Registration Guidelines: The Official Rules for 2025
Disclaimer: The information below is for general guidance only and is based on current Bureau of Immigration (BoI) rules. Immigration policies can change. Always verify specific requirements on the official e-FRRO portal or consult a qualified immigration lawyer.
What is FRRO Registration?
Foreigners visiting India for long-term stays (generally exceeding 180 days) are required to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO). This process is now primarily digital via the e-FRRO platform.
Below is a breakdown of requirements by category.
1. OCI Cardholders
Status: Generally Exempt.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, registered Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) are exempt from registration with the FRRO for any length of stay in India.
Important Compliance Note: While you do not need to register your arrival, you must ensure your OCI details are up to date.
- If you get a new passport, you may need to update your details online via the OCI Miscellaneous Services portal.
- Keeping your Indian address current in the OCI records is recommended for long-term residents.
2. Employment and Student Visas
Status: Mandatory (Time-Sensitive).
If you hold an Employment, Student, Research, or Medical Visa valid for more than 180 days:
- Requirement: You must register within 14 days of arrival in India.
- Note: The "180-day" buffer often does not apply to these categories. The requirement is usually immediate upon arrival. Check the stamp on your visa/passport; it often explicitly states: "Registration required within 14 days."
3. Tourist Visas
Status: Conditional.
For standard Tourist Visas, registration is generally not required if your stay does not exceed 180 days.
- The 180-Day Rule: Most tourist visas prohibit a continuous stay of longer than 180 days.
- Exceptions: If you are granted a special endorsement or if specific bilateral agreements apply, verify the exact text stamped on your visa.
- Overstaying: If you are unable to leave due to medical emergencies, you must apply for a visa extension via the e-FRRO portal immediately. Do not simply overstay.
How to Register (e-FRRO)
Physical visits to the FRRO office are rarely required. Applications are submitted online.

- Passport (Bio page and Visa page).
- Recent digital photograph.
- Proof of Residence (Form C generated by your landlord/hotel, or a Lease Agreement).
